I want a safe space at the shelter.

Sunday night, half a dozen new guys all showed up together. They’re all white, none over age 25, all covered with tattoos and piercings (including facial tattoos), all active addicts and all with significant time behind bars.

And that’s all they talk about: their past, present and future drug use, and their exploits in prison (sic, not jail).

I don’t want to hear it.

One may want to welcome everyone unconditionally. But you can’t meet someone where they’re at, if where they’re at is somewhere you’re unwilling to go.
